Mold remediation in the Chicago suburbs
Mold and mycotoxin projects across the Chicago suburbs, planned and staffed from our Avon, Indiana office.
Do you do mold remediation in the Chicago suburbs?
Yes. American Mold Experts does mold remediation in the Chicago suburbs of Illinois, with crews who travel from our Avon, Indiana office. We don't have an Illinois office, and the suburbs cover a lot of ground, so call with your address and we'll tell you honestly how we can schedule it. Every project is tested before and after, with mycotoxin testing when it's needed.
Storms, sewers and suburban basements
The Chicago suburbs span several counties, from older inner-ring towns to newer developments farther out, so no single description fits every house. What most share is a basement and exposure to intense summer storms. A heavy downpour can overwhelm storm drains and sewers, and water finds its way in through floor drains, window wells and foundation cracks.
Sewer backups are a familiar problem in parts of the region, especially where older sewer systems carry both stormwater and wastewater. Many homeowners have added backflow valves, overhead sewers or battery-backup sump pumps for that reason. When those fail, or a basement floods for the first time, the cleanup usually decides whether mold follows.
Much of the area sits on clay-rich soil that drains slowly and swells when wet. Water held against a foundation keeps basement walls damp, and the freeze-thaw cycles of a Chicago-area winter gradually widen small cracks.

Why we ask for your address first
The Chicago suburbs cover a large area, and every project there is staffed from our office in Avon, Indiana. Rather than publish a list of towns, we ask for your address and a description of the problem, then tell you plainly whether and when we can be there. Larger projects and mycotoxin work are what we travel for most. Once a project is on the calendar, testing happens on a scheduled day, and remediation is booked as a single continuous stretch after you approve the written scope. If your project isn’t a fit for our schedule, we’ll say so and tell you what to look for in a local company, including whether it tests before and after the work.
After the basement floods
Summer storms are the most common reason a suburban Chicago basement gets wet, and the first day or two matter most. Pull out wet carpet and pad, move stored boxes, run fans and dehumidifiers, and photograph everything for insurance. Mold remediation comes in when drying wasn’t fast enough or couldn’t reach behind finished walls. If the basement still smells weeks later, testing shows whether growth has started and how far it reaches. Our guide on what to do after a basement flood was written for Indiana, but the steps apply here too, and our basement mold in Indiana page covers the remediation itself.
Testing for what cleaning leaves behind
A flooded basement can be cleaned until it looks new and still hold mold fragments and mycotoxins in the dust. For families with someone sensitive to mold, that’s the part that matters. We test settled dust before and after remediation, clean inside containment with HEPA filtration, and treat surfaces with enzyme products. The lab report, not appearance, tells us when the work is done.
We remove mold and mycotoxins from buildings. We don’t diagnose or treat medical conditions.
Chicago suburbs questions
Have a question that isn't here? Call a specialist
Can you come to my suburb?
Call with your address and a quick description of the problem. Whether we can take a project depends on its size and our travel schedule, and we'll give you a direct answer on the first call instead of a vague promise.
Our basement flooded from a sewer backup. Is it a mold problem now?
It can become one. Sewage-contaminated water brings bacteria along with moisture, so porous materials it touched, like carpet, pad and the lower part of drywall, usually need to come out. If cleanup was fast and thorough, mold may never start. If a musty smell shows up later, testing will tell you what's growing and where.
Why bring in a company from Indiana when there are local firms?
For many projects, a local firm is the practical choice. Families call us when they need mycotoxin testing, a clearance standard set by the lab, or help after a previous remediation didn't hold. Those are the projects worth planning a trip around.
Does Illinois require mold remediation licensing?
Please confirm current Illinois and local requirements yourself, since we don't want to misstate them. Your village or city may also have its own permit or contractor rules for some work. As for us, we're an IICRC Certified Firm with CMR, CRMI and CCMI credentials.
Can you work in a condo or townhome?
Yes. Shared walls and common plumbing mean the source may be next door or in a common area, so we test to find where the moisture is coming from. We document the findings in writing for you and, if needed, for your association.
We're done when the lab says so.
Every remediation ends with clearance testing, and our work is backed by a complete-removal guarantee. We don't close a job on a failed result.
