How does mycotoxin testing work in Indianapolis?

Mycotoxin testing in Indianapolis looks for the toxic compounds certain molds leave in a home's settled dust. We collect dust from undisturbed surfaces in the rooms your family uses most, send it to a lab for a mycotoxin panel, and pair it with mold testing so the results point to a source. Older Indianapolis homes often have decades of water history, so the sampling plan follows that history.

What a spore count can't show in an older Indianapolis house

Many Indianapolis homes have been through several owners, a few leaks and at least one round of repairs nobody wrote down. A leak fixed ten years ago can still have left toxins in the wall cavity, the basement storage boxes or the ductwork. An air test on a dry day measures today's spores. It doesn't measure what that old water event left behind, and that is often exactly what the doctor is asking about.

Sound familiar?

  • Your doctor has asked whether your house could be involved, and you're not sure what to order.
  • You rent, and you need results you can share with both your landlord and your doctor.
  • The house had water damage before you bought it, and nobody can say how it was handled.
  • Boxes, furniture and keepsakes spent years in a damp basement, and you don't know if they're part of the picture.

We do it differently.

The AME Clearance Method

The testing visit, in order

Most of the visit goes into deciding where to sample. Collecting dust takes far less time than finding the right dust.

Talk to a specialist
  1. Hear the history

Who in the home is affected, what the doctor has asked for, and what the house has been through: leaks, floods, repairs and any past mold work.

  2. Trace the water

A moisture meter and thermal camera check basements, crawlspaces, plumbing walls and old roof-leak spots, because toxins concentrate where water sat longest.

  3. Pick undisturbed dust

Surfaces that haven't been cleaned in months, like door-frame tops, high shelves and return grilles, in bedrooms and the rooms where people spend the most time.

  4. Collect the samples

Sealed kits, new gloves at each location and a written record of where every sample came from, so the report reads room by room.

  5. Add mold testing

Air sampling with an outdoor comparison and an ERMI or HERTSMI-2 dust test show which molds were involved, so toxins can be matched to likely sources.

  6. Review with you

Lab results typically arrive in 24 to 48 hours. We go through them with you and, if you give permission, send them to your doctor.

Mycotoxin testing in Indianapolis, explained

Houses with a long water history

The Indianapolis homes we test for mycotoxins are often older than the families living in them. A 1920s bungalow may have had a leaking roof in one decade, a burst pipe in another and a basement that took on water every wet spring. Each event could have fed mold for a while before drying out. Toxins from each round settle in the same places: joist tops, duct insulation and the dust on anything stored below grade.

Ductwork in crawlspaces and basements

Post-war ranches across the outer townships often have the furnace and ducts in a crawlspace. Leaky return ducts there can draw crawlspace air, and the fine dust it carries, into the living space. When the history points that way, we sample dust at return grilles and in the rooms they serve. More on that route in whether mycotoxins can spread through HVAC, and on the crawlspace itself in crawlspace mold in Indiana.

Belongings that spent years below grade

Basements in older Indianapolis homes tend to hold everything: holiday boxes, spare furniture, books and paperwork. If that space has been damp, the items can carry contaminated dust upstairs every time they’re moved. Testing can include the storage area, so you have evidence to guide what to clean and what to replace. Our page on mycotoxins on belongings covers the options material by material.

Working with your doctor

Many families come to us with a request from a functional or integrative physician. With your permission, we’re glad to talk with that office about what they’d like the home testing to cover, and we’ll send them the lab report directly. We stay on the building side: what’s in the dust, where it likely came from and how it can be removed.

We test homes for mold and mycotoxins. We don’t diagnose, treat or give medical advice, and a home panel is not a medical test. Please rely on your doctor for health decisions. If you give permission, every result goes to them as well.

Common questions

Have a question that isn't here? Call a specialist

Can renters in Indianapolis get mycotoxin testing?

Yes. You can hire us directly for the unit you live in. We'll need access to the rooms you use and, ideally, shared areas like a basement or furnace closet, so it helps to tell the landlord. The report is yours to share with them and with your doctor.

Does a mycotoxin panel tell me whether my house made someone sick?

No. It tells you which toxins are present in the home's dust and roughly where. Whether that relates to anyone's health is a question for your doctor, who can weigh the home results alongside their own testing.

We had mold removed years ago. Is testing still worthwhile?

Often it is, particularly if the work was never verified with testing. Toxins can remain in dust and wall cavities after the mold itself is gone, and a panel shows whether that happened in your home.

Is an older Indianapolis home more likely to have mycotoxins?

Age alone doesn't decide it. What matters is how often the house has been wet and how thoroughly past damage was handled, and older homes have simply had more years for both.

Do you test homes all over Marion County?

Yes. We test houses, doubles and apartments throughout Indianapolis and the rest of Marion County, working from our office in Avon on the west side.

We're done when the lab says so.

Every remediation ends with clearance testing, and our work is backed by a complete-removal guarantee. We don't close a job on a failed result.
