Hiring an out-of-state mold remediation company

The same process we use at home, with more planning up front. Here's what happens, in order.

How does an out-of-state mold remediation company work?

An out-of-state mold remediation company follows the same steps as a local one, with more of the planning done before anyone travels. With us, it starts with a phone consultation, then on-site testing and inspection, then a written scope and price. Once you approve it, the work is scheduled, the crew travels to your home to remediate, and clearance testing confirms the result before the project closes.

Why families look beyond their local options

Many parts of the country have plenty of mold remediation companies and very few that test for mycotoxins, test to a doctor's target, or clean the whole house rather than the moldy room. Families who need that kind of work often discover there's nobody nearby who does it.

Hiring from out of state raises fair questions. Who do I call during the job? What happens if something new turns up? How do I know the crew will do what the paperwork says? A clear process answers most of them before they come up.

Sound familiar?

  • No local company offers mycotoxin testing or testing to your doctor's target.
  • You've called several companies and none could explain their clearance standard.
  • A local job already failed and you don't want to repeat it.
  • You're unsure how a company from another state would even get started.

We do it differently.

Why families trust us with their homes

  • Family-owned since 2008

A multigenerational family business. Not a franchise, not a private-equity rollup.

  • Credentialed where it isn't required

Indiana doesn't license mold remediators. We hold IICRC, CMR, CRMI and CCMI credentials anyway.

  • Called on as experts

Attorneys bring us into legal cases involving mold and mycotoxins.

  • Lab results in 24 to 48 hours

Every inspection comes with a written report, color photos and lab results.

The AME Clearance Method

How an out-of-state project runs

Six stages, in this order. Nothing moves to the next stage until you've approved the one before it.

Talk to a specialist
  1. Consultation

A phone conversation about the house, its water history, what testing has already been done and, if someone is sick, what their doctor has asked for.

  2. On-site testing and inspection

We visit the home to inspect for moisture and collect air, dust and mycotoxin samples. Lab results usually return in 24 to 48 hours.

  3. Written scope and price

What will be removed, cleaned and treated, which rooms will be contained, how the HVAC and belongings will be handled, and what clearance will measure.

  4. Scheduling

Once you approve the scope, we set dates together, including whether the family will stay elsewhere and when the moisture repair needs to be finished.

  5. Remediation

The crew travels to your home and carries out the written scope: containment, removal, enzyme treatment, HEPA cleaning and HVAC work.

  6. Clearance

Clearance testing measures the target in the scope. You receive the complete lab reports, and so can your doctor with your permission.

What every out-of-state project includes

  • A consultation before anyone travels
  • On-site moisture inspection
  • Air, dust DNA and mycotoxin testing
  • A written scope and price before work begins
  • Scheduling planned around your household
  • Containment and negative air
  • Enzyme treatment and HEPA cleaning
  • HVAC work where testing calls for it
  • Clearance testing with complete lab reports

Proof you can hold in your hands

When we finish, you don't get a handshake and a promise. You get the paperwork your family, your doctor, your insurer or your buyer can rely on.

  • Inspection report

What we found, where it is coming from, with color photos.

  • Written remediation plan

Scope, timeline and what will and won't be removed, before work starts.

  • Clearance lab report

Air, surface and mycotoxin results after the work is done.

  • A report for your doctor

With your permission, we share results directly with your care team.

What to expect from a project in another state

Before the first call: what to have ready

The consultation is where an out-of-state project takes shape, so a little preparation goes a long way. It helps to have:

  • The home’s age, size and type: basement, crawlspace or slab, and one or two stories
  • Its water history: leaks, floods, roof or plumbing repairs, sump pump failures
  • Any testing already done, and the reports if you have them
  • Photos of problem areas, the HVAC equipment and the basement or crawlspace
  • If someone is sick, which tests their doctor has asked for
  • Whether anyone is living in the home now

None of this replaces seeing the house. It simply lets the consultation focus on your questions instead of on basics.

Why testing happens on site

Remote projects can tempt everyone to skip ahead: send some photos, get a price, book the crew. We don’t work that way, because the price and the plan both depend on things photos can’t show. Where the moisture is coming from. How far dust has traveled through the HVAC system. Whether the damage is in one wall cavity or five. Testing and inspection answer those questions, and the written scope is built on what they find. Our page on mycotoxin testing explains what the lab looks for.

The written scope is the contract for the work

On any project, and especially one where you won’t see the crew every day, the written scope is what protects you. It should tell you, in plain language:

  • Which rooms will be contained, and how
  • What will be removed and what will be cleaned
  • How remaining toxins will be treated
  • Whether the HVAC system is included
  • What happens to belongings
  • Which repairs are ours and which belong to another trade
  • What clearance will test for, and what counts as passing
  • The price

If anything changes once the work begins, the change is explained and put in writing before we continue.

Getting the house ready for the crew

Most of the preparation happens before travel dates are set. The moisture source needs to be repaired, or scheduled for repair, so the work isn’t undone by the next storm. The family’s plans for where to stay need to be settled, especially if someone is sick. And belongings in the work areas usually need to be moved or sorted, which we’ll talk through during scheduling. Our answer on what to do before mold remediation has a fuller checklist.

How we work

The method doesn’t change with the ZIP code. Containment and negative air protect the rest of the house. Contaminated materials that can’t be saved are removed. Plant-based enzyme treatments break down remaining mycotoxins, and HEPA vacuuming and damp wiping remove the dust they travel on. We use products from US Enzyme for that step. Then clearance testing, compared against the baseline, shows whether the job is done. You can read the full method on our process page.

Who we are

American Mold Experts is family-owned and has been working since 2008, from our office in Avon, Indiana. We’re an IICRC Certified Firm, hold CMR, CRMI and CCMI credentials, and are BBB A+ accredited. You can reach us seven days a week, 8am to 8pm, at (833) 772-6653.

We remove mold and mycotoxins from buildings. We don’t diagnose or treat medical conditions, and nothing on this page is medical advice. If anyone in your home has symptoms, please work with a doctor. With your permission, we’re glad to share test results and our plan with them.

Common questions

Have a question that isn't here? Call a specialist

Do you really travel anywhere in the US?

Yes. We have local crews in Indiana and Southwest Florida, and we travel for mold and mycotoxin projects anywhere in the United States.

What kind of projects do you travel for?

Mostly mycotoxin projects and complex remediation, such as homes for families working with a doctor on mold illness and homes where an earlier remediation didn't pass testing.

How much does an out-of-state project cost?

It depends on the size of the home, how much is affected, and what the scope includes. After testing, we give you a written scope and price before any work begins, so you know the cost before you commit.

Can testing be done before I commit to remediation?

Yes. Testing and inspection come first, and you get the lab results and our written recommendations. You decide whether to go ahead from there.

Who fixes the leak or moisture source?

The written scope spells out which repairs are part of our work and which, if any, need another trade, such as a roofer or plumber. The source has to be fixed before final cleaning and clearance.

Does my state require a license for mold work?

Some states license mold assessors or remediators, and many don't. We'll talk through your state's requirements during the first consultation.

What happens if something unexpected turns up during the work?

Opening walls sometimes reveals more than testing could see. If the scope needs to change, we explain what we found and put the change in writing for your approval before continuing.

We're done when the lab says so.

Every remediation ends with clearance testing, and our work is backed by a complete-removal guarantee. We don't close a job on a failed result.
