Flat land, lots of lots, and rain with nowhere to go
Lehigh Acres started in 1954, when Chicago businessman Lee Ratner bought about 18,000 acres of ranch land in eastern Lee County. Developers platted it into well over 100,000 small residential lots and sold many of them by mail long before roads and houses reached them. It's still unincorporated, governed by Lee County, and it's the largest community in the eastern part of the county.
Because homes went up lot by lot over decades, housing ages vary from street to street: older block homes from the early decades, homes from the 2000s building boom, and new construction still going up. Most are single-story concrete block on a slab.
Lehigh Acres is well inland, so storm surge isn't the threat here. Rain is. The land is flat and drains through a network of canals, and after heavy storms, including Irma in 2017, parts of the community have been left with standing water in streets and yards. Water that sits against block walls and under doors is a slow but common start for mold.

Newer homes, tight houses
Many Lehigh Acres homes went up during the 2000s building boom or since, and new block construction has its own moisture habits. Concrete block and slabs hold water from construction and from any rain that fell before the roof went on. When drywall is hung and painted over block that hasn’t dried, the moisture has one way to go: into the back of the drywall. Newer homes are also sealed tightly, so the AC is the only thing pulling humidity out of the air. If it’s oversized, short-cycling, or draining poorly, humidity creeps up without anyone noticing.
That’s why the first question on a Lehigh Acres job is where the water came from, not how big the stain is. Our guide to mold in new Florida construction explains the usual causes.
After a heavy rain event
Here, flooding usually means rainwater with nowhere to drain, not a wall of surge. It pools in yards and streets, creeps under doors and into garages, and sits against the base of block walls. Wind-driven rain during a hurricane gets in around windows and through damaged roofs. Both kinds of water are easy to underestimate because the house never looks “flooded.” If your home took any water in a storm, photograph it, dry it fast, and have the lower walls checked. The steps in our hurricane and flood mold guide apply to rain flooding too.

Lehigh Acres mold questions
Have a question that isn't here? Call a specialist
Our Lehigh Acres house is only a few years old. How can it have mold?
New homes can trap moisture from construction, and they're built tight, so the AC has to do all the work of keeping humidity down. A clogged condensate drain, a roof or window leak, or drywall hung before the block was dry can all start growth in a house that looks brand new.
Water came under our doors during a storm but drained in a day. Is that a problem?
It can be. Baseboards, the bottom of the drywall and carpet pad soak water up fast, and in Florida heat mold can start within 24 to 48 hours. If anything stayed wet or smells musty now, have moisture readings taken along the lower walls.
I'm a landlord with a rental in Lehigh Acres. Can you help between tenants?
Yes. The turnover window is a good time to fix a problem properly. You get the independent assessor's scope and clearance report for your records, and we do the removal on a schedule that fits the vacancy.
Why don't you test the house yourselves?
Florida licenses mold assessors and remediators separately, and generally doesn't let one company do both on the same home within 12 months. So an independent licensed assessor tests before and after, and we do the removal. The company testing your home has no reason to find more mold than is there.
We're done when the lab says so.
Every remediation ends with clearance testing, and our work is backed by a complete-removal guarantee. We don't close a job on a failed result.
