Stachybotrys and other dark molds
Black mold removal in Indiana
Facts, not fear. We identify what's growing, remove it under containment and let the lab confirm it's gone.
How is black mold removed in Indiana homes?
Black mold removal in Indiana starts with a lab test, because many molds look black and only testing tells you whether you have Stachybotrys. Then the wet material is found and dried, the area is contained under negative air, and moldy drywall or ceiling tile is cut out and bagged. Framing is HEPA-cleaned and enzyme-treated, and clearance testing, including mycotoxins, confirms the result.
Why "black mold" is worth taking seriously, and calmly
"Black mold" usually refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, a greenish-black mold that grows on drywall paper, ceiling tile and other cellulose that has stayed wet for a long time. It can produce trichothecene mycotoxins. But plenty of harmless-looking molds are dark too, and plenty of dangerous ones aren't black at all. Color alone tells you very little. What matters is what's growing, how much, and whether its toxins have spread.
Sound familiar?
- You found dark growth behind a baseboard, under a sink or on a basement wall.
- The internet has convinced you to move out tonight.
- A handyman offered to bleach it and paint over it.
- You don't know whether the rest of the house is affected.
We do it differently.

The AME Clearance Method
The AME Clearance Method for black mold
Stachybotrys needs long-term water and it lives in porous materials, so the work centers on moisture, careful removal and proof.
Talk to a specialist-
Identify it
Tape lifts, air and dust samples go to the lab to confirm which molds are present. Results come back in 24 to 48 hours.
-
Find the long-term water
Stachybotrys doesn't grow from a single spill. We trace the leak, seepage or condensation that kept the material wet.
-
Contain the area
Plastic barriers, a zippered entry and HEPA negative air keep dust inside the work zone while material is disturbed.
-
Cut out contaminated material
Moldy drywall, ceiling tile, carpet pad and insulation are removed intact where possible and bagged inside containment.
-
Clean and treat what stays
Studs, plates and subfloor are HEPA-vacuumed, wiped and treated with a plant-based enzyme product that breaks down mold and mycotoxins.
-
Scrub the air and test
Air scrubbing continues until clearance testing, including a mycotoxin panel, confirms the area and adjoining rooms are clean.
What a black mold project includes
- Lab identification of the mold species present
- Air and dust sampling beyond the visible area
- Moisture source investigation
- Containment with a zippered entry and HEPA negative air
- Removal and bagging of contaminated porous materials
- HEPA vacuuming and detailed wiping of framing
- Enzyme treatment for mold and mycotoxins
- Clearance testing with a mycotoxin panel
- A written report you can keep for your records or a future sale

Black mold facts for Indiana homeowners
What “black mold” actually means
“Black mold” isn’t a scientific term. Most people use it to mean Stachybotrys chartarum, sometimes called toxic black mold. But many common molds are dark: Cladosporium, Alternaria and Aspergillus niger can all look black or dark green, and they show up on shower grout, window frames and basement walls all the time. Some of the most problematic indoor molds are gray, green or white. You can’t identify a mold by looking at it, which is why we send samples to the lab before planning the work. Our page on what Stachybotrys is covers the species in more detail.
Where Stachybotrys grows
Stachybotrys is a slow grower that needs material to stay wet for an extended period, and it prefers cellulose: the paper facing on drywall, ceiling tiles, cardboard and wood products. In Indiana homes, we most often find it:
- Inside walls behind a slow plumbing leak, often under kitchen and bathroom sinks
- On the back side of finished basement drywall where water seeps through the foundation
- Under carpet and pad after a basement flood that wasn’t fully dried
- On ceilings below a long-running roof or ice dam leak
- Around windows and exterior walls where condensation soaks in every winter
Because it grows in and behind materials, the visible patch is often the smallest part of the problem. A moisture meter and a look inside the wall cavity usually tell us far more than the stain on the surface.
Stachybotrys and mycotoxins
Stachybotrys can produce trichothecene mycotoxins, including satratoxins. Its spores are sticky and tend to stay put rather than float, so air samples can come back low even when growth is significant. The toxins can still travel on dust and tiny mold fragments once material is disturbed. That’s why we pair air sampling with dust and surface testing, and why a mycotoxin panel is part of our clearance. The difference between the mold and its toxins is explained in black mold vs. mycotoxins.
Why the drywall has to come out
Drywall is gypsum wrapped in paper, and Stachybotrys feeds on that paper from the inside out. Surface sprays can’t reach the growth in the core or on the back face. Contaminated drywall is cut out inside containment, typically with a margin beyond the visible edge, and bagged before it leaves the work area. The studs behind it are usually sound and can be cleaned and treated with our enzyme process. We use products from US Enzyme, and we test afterward to confirm the result.
What to do right now
- Stop the water if you can find it.
- Don’t scrub, sand, or run a fan at the growth.
- Close the room off and keep kids and pets out.
- Take photos for your records and your insurance agent.
- Schedule testing before anyone starts cutting.

Common questions
Have a question that isn't here? Call a specialist
Is black mold more dangerous than other mold?
Stachybotrys can produce potent mycotoxins, which is why it gets attention. But other common indoor molds, such as some Aspergillus and Penicillium species, can produce mycotoxins too. Public health agencies advise removing any indoor mold growth, whatever its color or species.
Do I need to leave my house if I find black mold?
Usually not right away. Keep people and pets out of the affected room, don't scrub or disturb it, and close the door. If anyone in the home is sick or especially sensitive, talk to your doctor about whether to stay elsewhere until testing is done.
Can I remove black mold myself?
The EPA says homeowners can often clean mold areas under about 10 square feet. Stachybotrys usually grows inside wet drywall, so small visible spots often mean more behind the wall. Scrubbing or cutting it without containment can spread dust and toxins through the house.
Does bleach kill black mold?
Bleach can kill mold on hard, non-porous surfaces. It doesn't penetrate drywall well, it doesn't remove the dead mold, and it doesn't break down mycotoxins. Moldy drywall should be removed, not bleached.
How much does black mold removal cost in Indiana?
Cost depends on how much material has to come out and how far the contamination has spread. Angi puts the Indianapolis average for mold remediation at about $1,999, with most jobs from $1,026 to $3,005. Hidden growth inside walls can change the scope, which is why we test before we price.
Is black mold removal covered by insurance in Indiana?
It depends on your policy and the cause. Mold from a sudden, covered water event is more likely to be covered than mold from a slow leak or long-term humidity. Ask your agent and keep our lab reports for your claim.
What's the difference between black mold removal and remediation?
Removal usually means getting rid of what you can see. Remediation also covers containment, the moisture source, hidden growth, airborne dust and mycotoxins, and ends with clearance testing. With Stachybotrys, the unseen part matters most.
We're done when the lab says so.
Every remediation ends with clearance testing, and our work is backed by a complete-removal guarantee. We don't close a job on a failed result.
