How much does mycotoxin testing cost?
Short answer
It depends mostly on how many samples you need, which lab and toxin panel are used, and whether an inspection is included. A single mail-in dust kit is the lowest-cost option. Professional testing costs more because it covers a sampling plan, several locations, inspection and interpretation. Ask for a written quote that lists every sample, the panel and the lab.
Why there’s no single price
Mycotoxin testing isn’t one product. A kit that analyzes one dust sample and a professional assessment of a whole house with several rooms, the HVAC system and a follow-up retest are very different jobs. Costs vary by the number of samples, the lab and the scope, so any flat number you see online is only useful if you know exactly what it includes.
The cheapest test isn’t always the least expensive choice. A single combined sample that shows toxins but can’t say which room they’re in often leads to a second round of testing, or to remediation that’s bigger or smaller than it needs to be. A few well-placed samples up front can save money on the work that follows.
What drives the price
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Number of samples | Each sample is analyzed separately. Separate rooms cost more than one combined sample but show where the problem is. |
| Size of the panel | Panels that look for more toxins or toxin groups usually cost more per sample. |
| Lab method | Immunoassay (ELISA) and mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) differ in what they measure and in price. |
| Sample type | Settled dust, surface swabs, bulk materials and air samples each involve different collection and lab work. |
| Inspection | Moisture mapping, thermal imaging and a visual inspection add time but find the source. |
| Mold DNA testing | Pairing a toxin panel with ERMI testing or HERTSMI-2 adds cost and shows which molds have been growing. |
| Before and after testing | A remediation project usually needs a baseline and a clearance round. |
| Location | Travel is part of the cost for projects outside a company’s local area. |
DIY kit versus professional testing
With a kit, you’re paying for lab analysis and doing the sampling yourself. With professional testing, you’re also paying for a sampling plan, trained collection, an inspection that looks for the moisture source, and someone to interpret the results in the context of the house. Which one fits depends on your goal. Our page on testing your home for mycotoxins yourself compares the two in detail.
How to spend wisely
- Put separate samples where a decision depends on the answer, such as a bedroom versus the basement.
- Start with settled dust. Air sampling for mycotoxins is rarely the best first test in a home.
- Use the same lab and method before and after remediation so the results can be compared.
- Ask whether the quote includes a written report and a walkthrough of the results.
- If you’re hiring for remediation, ask whether clearance testing is part of the job or separate.
- Check your policy before assuming anything about coverage. Our page on whether mold testing is covered by insurance explains the usual issues.
What a quote from us covers
We quote after we understand the house: its size, what’s happened to it, how many areas need sampling, and whether anyone in the home is working with a doctor. The quote lists each sample, the panel and the lab. Lab results typically come back in 24 to 48 hours, and we go through them with you. We serve the Midwest from our Avon, Indiana office and travel for projects nationwide.
We test buildings for mold and mycotoxins. We don’t diagnose or treat medical conditions, and home testing is not a medical test. If you have symptoms, please work with a doctor, and with your permission we’ll share our results with them.
We're done when the lab says so.
Every remediation ends with clearance testing, and our work is backed by a complete-removal guarantee. We don't close a job on a failed result.
