How long do mold test results take?
Short answer
Most mold lab results come back in 24 to 48 hours after the samples reach the lab. That covers standard air samples and tape or swab samples. Specialty tests, such as ERMI and HERTSMI-2 dust tests and mycotoxin panels, can take longer depending on the laboratory, and culture tests take longer still because the mold has to grow before it can be identified.
Turnaround by type of test
How long a result takes depends mostly on the lab method. Microscope counts are fast. Methods that grow mold or extract DNA and toxins take more steps. Labs set their own schedules, so the turnaround for the slower tests is worth confirming before the samples are collected, especially if they need to be run alongside faster ones.
| Test | Lab method | Typical turnaround |
|---|---|---|
| Air spore trap | Spores counted and identified under a microscope | 24 to 48 hours after the lab receives it |
| Tape lift or swab | Direct microscope examination | 24 to 48 hours after the lab receives it |
| ERMI or HERTSMI-2 | Mold DNA measured in dust (MSQPCR) | Often longer; depends on the lab |
| Mycotoxin panel | Specific toxins measured in dust or on surfaces | Often longer; depends on the lab |
| Culture sample | Mold grown on a dish, then identified | Longer, because growth takes time |
The clock starts when the lab receives the samples
Turnaround is counted from the moment the lab logs the samples in, not from the moment they’re collected. Getting them there takes time too. Samples collected on a Friday afternoon may not reach the lab until the following week, and holidays push things back. Many labs offer faster service at an added cost, which can help when a deadline is tight.
Mail-in home kits add even more time, since you ship them yourself and results usually arrive by email with no one to explain them. Our answer on whether home mold test kits are accurate covers the other trade-offs.
From lab report to a plan
A lab report is a table of numbers. Turning it into a decision means comparing indoor samples with outdoor ones, checking which molds are present, and lining the results up with what the inspection found. We go through the report with you once it arrives, rather than forwarding it and leaving you to decode it. If the report points to a problem, the written recommendations follow from that conversation.
When timing matters most
- Home purchases. Inspection contingency windows are often short. Schedule the mold inspection alongside the home inspection, and start any dust or mycotoxin tests early. The real estate mold inspection page covers how to fit testing into a contract.
- Clearance after remediation. Containment stays up until the results are in. Standard clearance samples keep that wait short. See clearance testing.
- Doctor appointments. If a physician wants results before a visit, work backward from the appointment and allow extra time for DNA or mycotoxin testing.
- Insurance claims. Adjusters may want documentation before work begins. Ask your insurer what they need before samples are taken.
Avoiding delays you can control
Most slowdowns happen before the samples ever reach the lab. A test collected under the wrong conditions may need to be repeated, which costs more time than any lab queue. A few things help:
- Tell us your deadline at the start. It changes which tests we recommend first and how we ship them.
- Make the attic hatch, crawlspace entry, furnace and electrical panel easy to reach on the day of the visit.
- Keep the house under normal conditions: windows closed, heating or cooling running, no fresh cleaning before a dust test.
- If a doctor or insurer has specific requirements, have them in writing before we sample, so nothing needs to be collected twice.
We're done when the lab says so.
Every remediation ends with clearance testing, and our work is backed by a complete-removal guarantee. We don't close a job on a failed result.
